A crochet starfish is a small circle with five triangular arms worked out from it in rows. Make the centre in rounds to 20 stitches, then work each arm on 4 of those stitches, decreasing every other row to a point. Two of these stars, sewn together with a little stuffing, make a plump sea star about 4 inches across.

Finish

  1. Texture: On one star, sew French knots in cream down the centre of each arm — or crochet the top star with puff stitches in Rnd 3.
  2. Join: Place the stars wrong sides together, arms lined up. Sc through both layers around the edge, working 3 sc at each arm tip.
  3. Stuff lightly before closing the last arm. A flat starfish looks more natural than a plump one.

Common questions

How do you crochet starfish arms?

Work each arm in rows on 4 stitches of the centre, decreasing one stitch every other row until one stitch is left. Then join yarn in the next stitch for the next arm.

How do I keep the arms from curling?

Block the stars flat before joining: pin, mist with water and let them dry.

Can I make a single-layer starfish?

Yes, as an appliqué. Sc around the edge once to neaten it.
