A crochet car key cover is a snug sleeve that wraps a key fob, leaving a small opening at the top for the keyring. Measure around the fob (2 × width + 2 × thickness), multiply by your stitches per inch, and take off 10% so it grips. Start with an oval base, work rounds up the fob, slide it in and decrease around the top. Thin cotton lets you press the buttons through it.

Find your count
- Measure the fob: a typical one is 1.4 in wide and 0.6 in thick, so 2 × (1.4 + 0.6) = 4 in around.
- DK cotton on 3 mm is about 5½ sc per inch: 4 × 5.5 = 22.
- Take off 10%: about 20 stitches. Chain half: 10.
The cover (20-stitch fob)
- Rnd 1: Ch 10. Sc in the 2nd ch, sc in the next 7, 3 sc in the last ch. Along the other side, sc in the next 7, 2 sc in the first ch. (20)
- Rnds 2–12: Sc in each st. Try the fob in; continue until the sleeve reaches the shoulder of the fob, where it narrows to the keyring hole. (20)
- Insert the fob now (with the keyring removed).
- Rnd 13: (3 sc, dec) × 4. (16)
- Rnd 14: (2 sc, dec) × 4. (12)
- Rnd 15: Sl st around, leaving the opening for the keyring. Fasten off and refit the keyring through the opening.
Flip keys and big fobs
| Key type | Change |
|---|---|
| Flip key | Work rounds only up to the hinge so the blade can still flip out |
| Large fob (2 × 0.8 in) | 2 × 2.8 × 5.5 = 31, minus 10% = 28 sts: ch 14 |
| Card-style key | Use the phone case formula and leave the top open |
Finish the set with a key fob wristlet, car coasters and a steering wheel cover.
Common questions
Do the buttons still work through a crochet key cover?
Yes, with thin cotton (DK or sport) and tight single crochet. Thick yarn makes buttons harder to press.
Will the cover block the key signal?
No. Cotton yarn doesn't block the radio signal from a key fob.
How do I remove the cover?
Take off the keyring and gently stretch the top opening over the fob. A cotton cover can be washed and refitted.
