In this post
A crochet pot cover is a soft basket shaped to fit around a plastic nursery pot. The plant stays in its pot, so you can lift it out to water. Nursery pots taper — narrower at the base — so the cover starts with a flat circle the size of the base, then adds a few stitches every few rounds to follow the slope, ending in a fold-over cuff.

Cover for a 6-inch pot
Join each round with a sl st; ch 1 doesn't count.
- Base, Rnds 1–7: 6 sc in a magic ring and increase 6 per round to (5 sc, inc) × 6. Check it's the size of the pot's base. (42)
- Rnd 8: Sc in the back loop only of each st. The edge turns up. (42)
- Rnds 9–11: Sc in each st. (42)
- Rnd 12: (6 sc, inc) × 6. (48)
- Rnds 13–15: Sc in each st. (48)
- Rnd 16: (7 sc, inc) × 6. (54)
- Rnds 17–19: Sc in each st. (54)
- Rnd 20: (8 sc, inc) × 6. (60)
- Rnds 21–26: Sc in each st. The cover should reach the rim of the pot. (60)
- Cuff, Rnds 27–30: Sc in the front loop only for one round, then 3 rounds of sc. Fold the cuff down to the outside.
Sizes
| Pot | Base stitches | Increase rounds | Top | Total rounds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 in | 30 (Rnd 5) | 2 (every 4th round) | 42 | 20 |
| 6 in | 42 (Rnd 7) | 3 (every 4th round) | 60 | 30 |
| 8 in | 54 (Rnd 9) | 4 (every 4th round) | 78 | 38 |
Pots vary. Try the cover on every few rounds and add or skip an increase round to match the taper.
Keep the yarn dry
Water through the drainage holes will soak the cover. Stand the nursery pot on a plastic saucer inside the cover, or water the plant in the sink and let it drain before putting it back.
Hanging plants? Use the crochet plant hanger. Storage baskets are in the crochet basket pattern, and a boho wall hanging completes a plant corner.
Common questions
How do you size a crochet pot cover?
Make the base circle the same size as the bottom of the pot, then increase gradually up the sides so the cover follows the pot's taper to the rim.
What yarn is best for plant pot covers?
Bulky cotton or a cotton blend. It holds the basket shape and doesn't fuzz. Jute gives a rustic look.
Will a crochet pot cover get mouldy?
Only if it stays wet. Use a saucer inside the cover and let it dry if it gets splashed.
