In this post
A crochet wall hanging is a flat panel of textured stitches hung from a dowel. In this design you work the first row of single crochet directly around the dowel, so there's nothing to sew. Then you stack bands of texture — bobbles, puff stitches and V-stitches — decrease to a point and finish with a long fringe. It's about 10½ inches wide and 20 inches long with fringe.

The hanging
Worked flat in rows. Ch 1 doesn't count as a stitch.
- Row 1: Make a slip knot on the hook. Holding the dowel above the work, sc 40 times around the dowel (hook under the dowel, yarn over, pull up, yarn over, pull through both). Ch 1, turn. (40)
- Rows 2–4: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (40)
- Row 5 (bobbles, wrong side): Sc 3, *bobble (5-dc cluster) in the next, sc 3* 9 times, sc 1. Ch 1, turn. The bobbles pop out on the right side. (9 bobbles)
- Rows 6–8: Sc across. (40)
- Row 9 (puffs, right side): Ch 2 (counts as hdc), skip the first st, *puff stitch (yo, pull up a loop, 3 times; yo, pull through all 7) in the next, ch 1, skip 1* 19 times, hdc in the last st. Turn.
- Row 10: Ch 1, sc in each puff and each ch-1 space across. (40)
- Rows 11–14: V-stitch: ch 3, *skip 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next* across, dc in the last. On the following rows work each V into the ch-1 space of the V below.
- Row 15: Ch 1, sc in each dc across (not in the ch-1 spaces), which brings you back to 40. (40)
- Row 16: Sc across. (40)
- Rows 17–34 (point): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc to the last 2, sc2tog. Turn. Add a bobble row every 4th row, keeping 3 sc between bobbles. (4)
- Fasten off.
Fringe and hanging
- Cut 40 strands of yarn, each 16 in long.
- Fold two strands in half; pull the fold through an edge stitch with the hook; pull the ends through the fold. Repeat every other stitch along both slanted edges.
- Lay the hanging flat and trim the fringe into a V that follows the point.
- Tie twine to both ends of the dowel for hanging.
Make it yours

|---|---|
| Ombré | Change colour for each band: cream, sand, terracotta, rust |
| Rainbow | Use the ripple stitch for a band and six colours |
| Nursery | Sew butterflies or stars on the plain bands |
| Straight bottom | Skip the point and work 10 plain rows |

Common questions
How do you attach a crochet wall hanging to a dowel?
Work the first row of single crochet directly around the dowel, as if the dowel were the row below. The panel is attached with no sewing.
What yarn is best for a wall hanging?
Cotton or a cotton blend: it shows texture clearly and hangs straight. Macramé cord also works with a 6 mm hook.
Why are my bobbles on the wrong side?
Bobbles pop out on the side facing away from you. Work bobble rows on wrong-side rows so they show on the front.
