A crochet tissue box cover is a square top with a hole in the middle and four sides that hang down. Start with a chain ring as big as the tissue opening, work a square around it in double crochet like a granny square, then turn the corner with a back-loop round and work straight sides in half double crochet. Slip it over a standard cube box.

Join each round with a sl st. Ch 3 counts as a dc.

  1. Ring: Ch 24 and join into a ring. This is the tissue opening (about 2 in across).
  2. Rnd 1: Working around the ring (not into the chains), ch 3, 5 dc, ch 2; *6 dc, ch 2* 3 times. Join. (24 dc + 4 corners)
  3. Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in each dc to the corner, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner space. Join. (40)
  4. Rnd 3: Repeat Rnd 2. (56)
  5. Check: The square should match the top of the box, about 4½ in. Add a round if needed.

Sides

  1. Rnd 4: Ch 2, hdc in the back loop only of each dc, and 2 hdc in each corner space. Join. (64)

Rectangular boxes

For a long box (about 9 × 4½ × 3 in), chain 40 for an oval opening and work Rnd 1 as (12 dc, ch 2, 6 dc, ch 2) twice. Work the same corner increases and only 6–7 rounds for the shorter sides.

Common questions

What size is a standard tissue box for a crochet cover?

Cube ("boutique") boxes are about 4½ × 4½ × 5¼ inches. Measure your box — brands vary by up to half an inch.

How do you make the hole in a tissue box cover?

Start with a chain ring as big as the opening and work the first round around the ring instead of into the chains.

Is cotton or acrylic better?

Either. Cotton keeps a crisp shape; acrylic is softer and cheaper. Use cotton in a steamy bathroom.
