A crochet rug is a big flat circle of tight single crochet in a thick, strong material. T-shirt yarn on a 10 mm hook makes a rug that's soft underfoot, about half an inch thick and machine washable. You add 6 stitches every round, joining each round so it stays round, and stop when it's the size you want — about 25 rounds for 30 inches.

The rug
Join each round with a sl st to the first sc; ch 1 doesn't count.
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. Join. (6)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, inc in each st. Join. (12)
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, (sc, inc) × 6. Join. (18)
- Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in the first st, inc, (2 sc, inc) × 5, sc in the last st. Join. (24)
- Rnds 5–25: Keep adding 6 stitches each round: (3 sc, inc), (4 sc, inc), and so on. On even rounds, start with half the sc count before the first inc so the increases don't stack. (150)
- Edge: 1 round of sl st, worked loosely. Fasten off and weave the ends in securely.
Keeping it flat
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Edges ripple like a ruffle | Too many stitches | Work one round with no increases |
| Rug cups like a bowl | Too few stitches | Add an extra 6 in the next round |
| Hexagon shape | Increases stacked | Stagger them every other round |
T-shirt yarn varies in thickness from cone to cone, so check the rug lies flat every few rounds and adjust.
Sizes
| Use | Diameter | Rounds | Yarn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bath mat / chair pad | 20 in | 17 | About 200 yd |
| Bedside rug | 30 in | 25 | About 450 yd |
| Living room | 48 in | 40 | About 1,150 yd |
For a bath mat, cotton is more absorbent: use super bulky cotton or three strands of worsted cotton held together. Matching bathroom set: tissue box cover and towel topper.
Safety: stop it slipping
Crochet rugs slide on hard floors. Put a non-slip rug pad underneath, or paint lines of liquid latex or silicone on the back and let them dry. Don't use a crochet rug at the top of stairs.

Common questions
What is the best yarn for a crochet rug?
T-shirt yarn or super bulky cotton. They're thick, strong, washable and wear well underfoot. Avoid soft acrylic, which pills and flattens.
How much T-shirt yarn do I need for a rug?
About 450 yards for a 30-inch round rug — usually four cones. Area grows fast: a 48-inch rug needs over 1,100 yards.
Can you wash a crochet rug?
Yes. Wash a T-shirt yarn or cotton rug on a gentle cycle and dry it flat. Large rugs may need a laundromat machine.
