A crochet star pillow is two flat five-pointed stars joined and stuffed. Each star is a round centre that grows by 5 stitches a round to 30, then five arms worked in rows on 6 stitches each, decreasing to a point. In chunky chenille the cushion is about 14 inches from point to point — big enough to hug, small enough for a crib-side shelf.

Star (make 2)

  1. Rnd 1: 5 sc in a magic ring. Join. (5)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (10)
  3. Rnds 3–6: Increase 5 per round: (sc, inc) × 5 (15); (2 sc, inc) × 5 (20); (3 sc, inc) × 5 (25); (4 sc, inc) × 5. Join. (30)

Arms (5 on each star)

  1. Rows 1–2: Sc in the next 6 sts only; ch 1, turn; sc across. (6)
  2. Row 3: Sc2tog, sc across. (5)
  3. Row 4: Sc across. (5)
  4. Rows 5–10: Keep decreasing 1 st on every odd row. (2)
  5. Row 11: Sc2tog. Fasten off. (1)
  6. Join yarn in the next unworked st of Rnd 6 and repeat for the next arm.

Always decrease at the same edge (the start of the row) and the arms lean slightly, like a hand-drawn star. Alternate edges for straight arms.

Face and assembly

  1. Face (optional): On one star, embroider two curved "sleepy" eyes and a small smile in black, and two pink cheeks. Avoid buttons or safety eyes for babies.
  2. Join: Place the stars wrong sides together. Sc through both layers around, working 3 sc at each tip and sc2tog at each inner corner.
  3. Stuff: Stuff each arm as you close it, then the centre. Keep the points firm.

Smaller stars for ornaments are in the crochet star pattern. Another shaped cushion kids love: the daisy pillow.

Common questions

Is a crochet star pillow safe for a baby?

Use embroidered faces (no buttons or safety eyes) and sew it very securely. Keep pillows out of the crib for babies under 12 months, following safe-sleep guidance.

How do you make sharp star points?

Work 3 sc in each tip when joining, and stuff the points firmly with small pieces of fibrefill pushed in with a chopstick.

Can I make a moon pillow too?

Yes. Make two large circles, cut a smaller circle shape from one side by working short rows, or simply crochet a crescent in rows with increases on one edge and decreases on the other.
