A classic crochet teddy bear has six parts: a head, a body, two arms and two legs, plus a muzzle and ears. The head is a 36-stitch ball, the muzzle a small cup in tan, the ears flat half circles cupped forward. Legs are slightly wider at the foot so the bear sits steadily. In worsted acrylic it stands about 7 inches tall.

Head

  1. Rnds 1–6: 6 sc in a magic ring and increase 6 per round to (5 sc, inc) × 6. (36)
  2. Rnds 7–12: Sc in each st. Insert the eyes between Rnds 9 and 10, 7 sts apart. (36)
  3. Rnds 13–16: Decrease 6 per round: (4 sc, dec), (3 sc, dec), (2 sc, dec), (sc, dec) × 6. Stuff firmly. (12)
  4. Rnd 17: Dec × 6. Close. (6)

Muzzle and ears

  1. Muzzle: In tan, 6 sc in a ring; inc in each (12); (sc, inc) × 6 (18); 1 round of 18 sc. Embroider a black nose and a small mouth. Stuff lightly and sew between and below the eyes.
  2. Ears (make 2): 6 sc in a ring; inc in each (12); 2 rounds of 12 sc. Flatten without stuffing and sew to the top of the head, cupped forward.

Body and limbs

  1. Body: 6 sc in a ring and increase to 30 (Rnd 5). Rnds 6–13: sc 30. Rnd 14: (3 sc, dec) × 6 (24). Rnd 15: sc 24. Rnd 16: (2 sc, dec) × 6 (18). Stuff and leave open to sew under the head.
  2. Arms (make 2): 6 sc in a ring; (sc, inc) × 3 (9); 8 rounds of 9 sc. Stuff the bottom half only so the arms hang naturally. Sew to the sides of the body just below the neck.
  3. Legs (make 2): 6 sc in a ring; inc in each (12); 2 rounds of 12 sc; (2 sc, dec) × 3 (9); 5 rounds of 9 sc. Stuff firmly and sew to the bottom front of the body so the bear sits.
  4. Bow: Tie a ribbon around the neck, or crochet one with the bow pattern.

Common questions

How long does it take to crochet a teddy bear?

About 4 hours in worsted yarn: an hour for the head, an hour for the body, and two for the limbs, muzzle, ears and assembly.

Is a crochet teddy bear safe for babies?

Yes, if you embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes, sew every part on very securely and use washable yarn.

Can I make a bigger teddy bear?

Use thicker yarn and a bigger hook — the stitch counts stay the same. Chunky chenille doubles the size.
