A koala is recognisable from three features: big round fluffy ears, a large oval black nose, and a wide head. The head is a 36-stitch ball (bigger than the body), the ears are flat circles with a white fluffy front, and the nose is a small stuffed oval. Arms long enough to wrap around a pencil make it a hugging koala — or sew a peg between them for the classic Australian clip-on souvenir.

Common questions

How do you make a crochet koala nose?

Crochet a small oval around a 4-chain, work 2 rounds, stuff it lightly and sew it vertically between the eyes. It should be big — it's the koala's most recognisable feature.

How do I make fluffy koala ears?

Sew loops of white yarn onto the ear fronts, or use white acrylic and brush it with a pet slicker brush until it fluffs up.

What is a clip-on koala?

A classic Australian souvenir: a small koala with a peg sewn between its arms, so it can hug a pencil, a bag strap or a curtain.
