A crochet snail shell is a long tube that starts at 6 stitches and widens slowly to 18, stuffed and rolled into a spiral. Because it grows only 2 stitches every 3 rounds, the tube tapers like a real shell, and coiling it from the narrow end gives the spiral. The body is a soft slug shape with two antennae, sewn under the shell.

Shell

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: (2 sc, inc) × 2. (8)

  6. Rnds 8–19: Keep going: increase 2 every third round — (4 sc, inc) × 2 = 12, (5 sc, inc) × 2 = 14, (6 sc, inc) × 2 = 16, (7 sc, inc) × 2 = 18 — with 2 plain rounds after each. Stuff lightly as you go. (18)
  7. Rnd 20: Sc in each st. Stuff, and leave the end open. (18)
  8. Coil: Starting at the narrow tip, roll the tube into a flat spiral and sew each coil to the one before. The open end sits at the bottom.

Common questions

How do you crochet a snail shell?

Crochet a long tube that widens very slowly — 2 stitches every 3 rounds — then stuff it lightly and roll it into a spiral from the narrow end, sewing each coil in place.

How do I keep the spiral flat?

Stuff the tube lightly so it bends easily, and sew each coil to the side of the previous one rather than on top of it.

Can I make a snail keychain?

Yes. Use DK yarn on 2.5 mm and stop the shell at 14 stitches.
