A crochet spider is two small balls and eight legs. The body is an 18-stitch sphere, the head a 12-stitch ball, and each leg is a short strip of single crochet folded around half a pipe cleaner, so the spider can stand, climb or hang. In worsted yarn it takes about an hour.

It's the natural partner for a crochet spider web: one web, two or three spiders, and the Halloween porch is done.

Legs (make 8)

  1. Strip: Ch 15. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. (14)
  2. Wire: Lay half a pipe cleaner along the strip, fold the strip around it lengthwise and whipstitch the long edges closed.
  3. Attach: Sew four legs on each side of the body, along Rnds 4–5, slightly angled forward and back.
  4. Pose: Bend each leg up then down at about one-third of its length — the "knee" makes it look like a spider instead of an octopus.

Variations

VersionChange
TarantulaUse eyelash or brushed yarn, or brush the finished spider with a pet brush
Cute spiderBigger 12 mm eyes, pink felt cheeks, a tiny bow
Black widowEmbroider a red hourglass on the underside of the body
Hanging spiderSew a long clear thread to the top of the body to dangle it from a door frame

Safety note

Pipe-cleaner legs have wire ends, so this is decor, not a toy for babies or toddlers. For a child's spider, skip the wire and stuff the legs with a strip of felt instead.

Make a scene with the crochet pumpkin and the crochet skull.

Common questions

How do you make crochet spider legs stand up?

Put a pipe cleaner or thin craft wire inside each leg. Fold the single crochet strip around it and sew it shut, then bend a knee into each leg.

How long does a crochet spider take?

About an hour: 20 minutes for the body and head, 30–40 minutes for eight legs.

Can I make the legs without sewing?

Yes. Wrap the pipe cleaners tightly with black yarn and a dab of glue at each end, then push them through the body between stitches.
