A crochet mummy is a capsule shape wrapped in crochet bandages. You make a 24-stitch stuffed body, then crochet long strips of half double crochet and sew them on at slight angles, leaving a gap for the eyes. The bandages hide uneven stitches, so it's one of the most forgiving amigurumi for beginners.

Body

Use grey or beige for the body if you want shadows to show between the bandages; otherwise use white throughout.

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: (Sc, inc) × 6. (18)
  4. Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) × 6. (24)
  5. Rnds 5–14: Sc in each st. Insert the eyes between Rnds 6 and 7, 4 sts apart. (24)
  6. Rnd 15: (2 sc, dec) × 6. (18)
  7. Rnd 16: (Sc, dec) × 6. Stuff firmly. (12)
  8. Rnd 17: Dec × 6. Close and hide the tail. (6)

Bandages

  1. Strip (make 5–6): In white, ch 40. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. (38)
  2. Wrap: Starting at the base, wrap a strip around the body at a slight angle and tack it down with a few stitches. Overlap each strip a little on the one below.
  3. Eye gap: Leave one row of the body showing around the eyes — a strip just above and just below them frames the "peek".
  4. Loose ends: Let one end dangle on purpose. It reads as an unravelling bandage.

Common questions

Is a crochet mummy good for beginners?

Yes. The body uses only single crochet in the round, and the bandages hide tension changes and gaps. It's a good second amigurumi after a simple ball.

How do you make the mummy bandages?

Chain about 40 and work half double crochet back along it. Wrap and tack the strips around the stuffed body at angles, overlapping them.

Can I make it without safety eyes?

Yes. Embroider the eyes with black yarn, or sew on small black felt circles, before wrapping.
