In this post
Mini amigurumi use the same stitches as regular amigurumi, just with thinner yarn and a smaller hook. The stitch counts don't change: a 12-stitch ball in sport yarn on a 2 mm hook is about ¾ inch, and in size 10 thread on 1.25 mm it's under half an inch. Minis are quick (about 15 minutes each), use scraps, and make perfect keychains, earrings and shelf decor.

Yarn and hook guide
| Size | Yarn | Hook | 12-stitch ball |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | DK (#3) | 2.5 mm | About 1 in |
| Mini | Sport (#2) cotton | 2 mm | About ¾ in |
| Micro | Fingering (#1) or size 3 thread | 1.5 mm | About ½ in |
| Nano | Size 10 thread | 1.25 mm | About ⅓ in |
Use mercerised cotton for crisp stitches. Fuzzy yarns hide the tiny details. See the thread guide for thread sizes.
Tips for tiny pieces
- Light: Work under a bright lamp; dark yarn is much harder to see.
- Marker: Use a contrasting strand of thread as a stitch marker.
- Stuffing: Pull fibrefill into tiny wisps and push it in with tweezers or a toothpick.
- Eyes: French knots in black embroidery thread, or 3–4 mm black beads sewn on. Safety eyes are too big.
- No sewing: Make minis in one piece where possible — see no-sew amigurumi.
Five tiny patterns
- Mini chick: In yellow, 6 sc in a ring; inc in each (12); 3 rounds of 12 sc; stuff; dec × 6. French-knot eyes and an orange straight-stitch beak. (12)
- Mini mushroom: Cap in red: 6 sc in a ring; inc in each (12); (sc, inc) × 6 (18); 1 round of 18 in the back loop only; (sc, dec) × 6 (12). Stem in cream: 6 sc in a ring, 3 rounds of 6. Stuff both and sew the stem under the cap. White dots on the cap.
- Mini heart: Two humps of 6 sc in a ring, inc to 12 (1 round of 12); join with no chain and work around both (24); then (4 sc, dec) × 4 (20), (3 sc, dec) × 4 (16) and so on to 4. Stuff as you go.
- Mini bear head: 6 sc in a ring; inc to 12; (sc, inc) × 6 (18); 3 rounds of 18; decrease to 6. Ears: 5 sc in a ring, sl st, sew on. Muzzle: a French knot nose on a tan straight-stitch oval.
- Mini ghost: In white, 6 sc in a ring; inc to 12; 4 rounds of 12; last round (sl st, ch 2, sl st) in each st for a wavy hem. Two black French knots for eyes.

Common questions
What hook size do I need for mini amigurumi?
2–2.5 mm with sport or DK yarn for minis about an inch tall; 1.25–1.5 mm with thread for micro amigurumi.
Do I need different patterns for mini amigurumi?
No. Any amigurumi pattern can be made mini by using thinner yarn and a smaller hook — the stitch counts stay the same.
How do I add eyes to tiny amigurumi?
Embroider French knots with black thread or sew on 3–4 mm black beads. Even the smallest safety eyes are usually too big.
