A crochet glasses case is a long rectangle folded at the bottom and seamed up both sides. Griddle stitch — alternating single and double crochet — makes a dense, slightly bumpy fabric that cushions lenses and doesn't stretch. Make it about an inch longer and half an inch wider than the folded glasses, and add a clip loop so it hangs on your bag.

The case (reading glasses)

  1. Row 1: Ch 16. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, *dc in the next, sc in the next* across, ending with sc. Ch 1, turn. (15)
  2. Row 2: Dc in each sc and sc in each dc across. Ch 1, turn. (15)
  3. Rows 3–34: Repeat Row 2. The piece should measure about 13 in.
  4. Fold: Fold in half with the right side out. Sc through both layers up each side.
  5. Top: Sc around the opening, then 1 round of crab stitch for a firm edge.

Each row stacks a dc on a sc and a sc on a dc, which gives griddle stitch its little bumps.

Common questions

What is the best stitch for a crochet glasses case?

Griddle stitch or moss stitch. Both are dense and padded, so lenses are protected from keys and coins in a bag.

Will a crochet case scratch my lenses?

Cotton is soft and won't scratch. Avoid metallic or rough yarns, and line the case with microfibre for extra care.

How long does a crochet glasses case take?

About an hour and a half in worsted cotton.
