A 3D crochet heart is two rounded humps joined side by side, then decreased evenly to a point. Make each hump as the top of a ball, join them with two chains, and work around both at once; decreasing 4 stitches every round turns the shape into a heart. In chunky chenille on a 6 mm hook it's an 11-inch plush pillow.

Humps (make 2)

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnds 2–7: Increase 6 per round: inc in each (12); (sc, inc) × 6 (18); (2 sc, inc) × 6 (24) … (5 sc, inc) × 6. (42)
  3. Rnds 8–11: Sc in each st. (42)
  4. Fasten off the first hump. Leave the second on the hook.

Join and shape

  1. Join: From the second hump, ch 2 and sc into any st of the first hump. Sc around the first hump (42), sc in the 2 chains, sc around the second hump (42), sc into the other side of the 2 chains. Place a marker. (88)
  2. Next rnd: Sc in each st. (88)
  3. Decrease rounds: (20 sc, dec) × 4 (84); then (19 sc, dec) × 4 (80); keep going, one fewer sc between decreases each round. Stuff as you go. (-4 each)
  4. Last rounds: At 8 stitches, stuff the point firmly and dec × 4. Close the hole. (4)
  5. Gap: Sew the small gap between the humps closed if it shows.

Line up two of the four decreases with the sides of the heart (where the humps meet the body) for the best shape.

Chenille tips

  • Chenille hides stitches, so use stitch markers at the start of each round.
  • Keep tension relaxed; tight chenille can "worm" (pull loops out of the fabric).
  • Weave ends in back and forth three times — chenille is slippery.

Common questions

How do you crochet a 3D heart?

Make two half-balls (the humps), join them with two chains and work around both together. Then decrease evenly every round until it closes at a point.

How much chenille do I need for a heart pillow?

About 160 yards of super bulky chenille for an 11-inch heart.

How do I stop stuffing showing through chenille?

Use a hook one size smaller than the label suggests, and stuff firmly but not so much the stitches stretch open.
