A crochet makeup bag that stands up needs boxed corners. You crochet one rectangle, fold it in half, seam the sides, then flatten each bottom corner into a triangle and stitch across it — that turns the flat pouch into a little box with a 2-inch base. Add a wipe-clean lining for spills and an 8-inch zip. Unlike a flat zipper pouch, it holds bottles upright.

The bag

  1. Row 1: Ch 37. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. Ch 2, turn. (35)
  2. Rows 2–30: Hdc in the third loop of each st across. Ch 2, turn. (35)
  3. Check: The rectangle should be about 10 × 12 in.
  4. Edge: Sc around all four sides, with 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off.

Box the corners

  1. Fold the rectangle in half, right sides together, so Row 1 meets Row 30.
  2. Sl st or whipstitch both side seams.
  3. Flatten one bottom corner so the side seam lies along the centre of the bottom fold, making a triangle.
  4. Measure 1 in from the tip and sew straight across the triangle. Tuck the tip inside, or trim and secure it. Repeat on the other corner.
  5. Turn the bag right side out. The base is now about 2 in deep.

Lining and zip

  1. Cut a fabric rectangle ½ in larger than the crochet on all sides. Sew it into the same shape, with the same boxed corners.
  2. Drop the lining inside the bag, wrong sides together, and fold the top edge of the lining under.
  3. Pin the zip between the crochet and the lining along the top. Backstitch through all layers by hand.
  4. Add a crochet tassel or a cherry charm to the zip pull.

Common questions

How do you make a crochet bag stand up?

Box the corners: flatten each bottom corner into a triangle and sew across it. The wider the triangle you sew off, the deeper the base.

Should a crochet makeup bag be lined?

Yes. Makeup leaks and powder gets everywhere. A wipe-clean or laminated cotton lining protects the crochet and is easy to clean.

Can I add a zip without a sewing machine?

Yes. Pin the zip in place and backstitch through the crochet and lining by hand with strong thread.
